“Pioneer Women”, Season 1, Episode 25, Filmed 2/22/52, Aired 3/31/52

Every year on my birthday, I buy myself something from my favorite clothing store, Anthropology. In honor of Lucy I bought myself my first apron. It’s white with black polka dots and lots of ruffles. Wearing it makes me want to wash dishes and cook. It’s too cute, Happy Birthday to me!
While Lucy is washing dishes she realizes how many dishes she’s washed since she’s been married, it’s in the 1,000’s. Lucy and Ethel decide they aren’t going to wash anymore until the men buy them dish washers. After the men decline, they bet the lady’s that they couldn’t live without modern day devices. The lady’s take their bet, the men and the women decide to live like it’s 1900 and whoever breaks first has to pay $50 to the husband/wife. While they are cooking, dressing and bathing like the 1900’s, Lucy and Ethel are waiting to hear back from the “Woman’s Society Club”, the most elite club in New York City. The woman are having hard time dealing with living in the 1900’s. Ethel takes 3 hours to churn a little butter, and Lucy’s Bread explodes in the oven. The boys come up to show how much they love their old clothes, that the four of them are wearing, when the head “Society” women do a surprise visit. Lucy is mortified with the appearance of the house and their clothes. When Ricky tries to help by saying they were rehearsing for his show, the “Society” women had a look of disgust, “show people”. Lucy tells them off saying she doesn’t want to be part of their club. Everyone is so proud of her, Ricky pays her the $50 and lets her win the bet.
I LOVED this episode, I watched it THREE TIMES! There were MANY reasons why I loved it, one reason was because of the scene where Lucy’s bread explodes, well not really “explodes” more like EXPANDS. It’s very funny and very famous. The other reason I loved it was when Lucy gave her speech about why she wouldn’t want to join their group. It was such a “classy” middle finger it brought me to tears. Very honest and genuine, as if she had gone through this before, people not taking her seriously because she was a “funny lady” actress. If anything, she was better then everyone else. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLdf8WwkMWw
